Workshop „Decolonizing mental health in everyday life“

ABC Bildungs- und Tagungszentrum, Bauernreihe 1, 21706 Drochtersen-Hüll

This workshop is conducted by Denise Awura Asare-Kumi (Ghana) and Inga Henseler (Germany), two participants of the kulturweit-Tandem programme, on the effect of colonialism on mental health in everyday life.

Colonialism did not only affect people in the global south in the past. Although we are no longer in colonial times, these issues still linger in the post-colonial era and still have effects for instance, on the upbringing of Africans which in turn has influenced one way or the other their mental health. Stereotypical views, racism, discrimination and racial profiling on the topic of skin colour, hairstyles, clothing and many more are felt on a day-to-day basis.

We have thereby come together as a tandem team with the help of the UNESCO kulturweit Tandem Program and the ABC Bildungs- und Tagungszentrum to bring this issue to light and to find ways and methods together to combat the issue or as we call it to „Decolonize Mental Health in Everyday Life“

In our workshop we will discuss issues such as:

  • What is(Post)-colonialism
  • German involvement in colonialism
  • Effects of colonialism in the post-colonial era on mental health in everyday life
